Poem #8: The Prolonged Glance

Hello reader! First thing first, I changed the theme of this blog! I kinda want to have a new mood so I decided to go with this one and I think I kinda like it. What do you think?

Okay, so school has been really exhausting these days, so I can't continue to write the series of my trip to Bukittinggi in July, 2023. And while I'm currently writing the next post of the series, I'm gonna post a poem I just wrote yesterday!

Yesterday, Friday, December 1 2023, precisely during recess after I finished one of my finals, I suddenly thought about that one moment, when for your whole life you always felt like an outsider, and never been able to "fit in",  but then you met someone that made you think "oh wow, this person is literally a copy of me". You just feel so connected with them, and it's like this person is all you've been wanting and searching for.

So here it is! It's called "The Prolonged Glance", by me.

The Prolonged Glance

When we immediately look for each other's eyes after you said, “I’m a stranger in my own life too”,

When we keep sharing the prolonged glance,

As if we found home in each other’s eyes,

That’s where it hits me.

We’re just two lonely strangers, not knowing where we could fit in,

No matter how many times we shatter ourselves and reflect our surroundings like a mirrorball.

We’re just two outsiders, staring into the world with our hands on the glass wall that stands between,

Watching as a spectator while dreaming of being the player.

We're just two hurt creatures, desperately putting bandages over our bullet holes,

We know it won't work, but that's all that we could do, right?

But that’s alright now.

Now that I found home in your observant eyes,

Now that I know wherever you stray, I'll follow,

Now that everything feels so obvious,

I think I’m not so alone then.

So, how was it? I had a lot of fun writing this. I mean, after a hard, frustrating exam, writing something and loving the result is a really relaxing thing to do.

Okay, I'm gonna go continue writing the new Bukittinggi post, so I'll see you soon! Love you, readers!

All the love, -R-

  1. I fucking love this poem

(I don't have wide range of vocabulary about adjectives, so I can't make any extravaganza compliments 🙏)
